What is the Co-op?

The RMIT Bookshop Co-op was founded in 1960 by RMIT students to provide textbooks, art materials and other equipment to students at low prices. The Co-op is owned by members, and we’re dedicated to providing members with a great range and great prices.

What does membership get me?

Co-op members receive a 12% discount on almost all our books, stationery, art materials, medical & lab equipment, calculators and magazines. That’s bigger than student discount, and applies to lots more stuff (student discount only applies to books). Your member discount is available at our stores in Little Latrobe St, Bourke Street and Bundoora.

How much does it cost to become a member?

Membership costs $10 (or $10.50 if paid for on a card). This is a once-only charge, and your membership lasts as long as you want to keep it. If you’ve finished your course and no longer need your membership, you can resign from the Coop and get your $10 back any time after the first 12 months.

How do I join?

Join online or at any of our stores. Signing up is simple, quick and you can start using your discount card right away!

RMIT Bookshop EDFEST!

Why not spend Summer doing some PD! Cheaper Books!

You’re probably sick of hearing about the dollar, retail and all that stuff but just hear us out on this one!

You may have noticed over the past few months that lots of our new books - especially in the areas of art, design and nonfiction hardbacks - have been coming down in price, thanks to the strength of the Australian Dollar against the US Dollar, the Pound and the Euro. Most our wonderful publishing friends have done a great job passing on price reductions, so if you haven’t visited us in a while you might be pleasantly surprised.

The little problem we have is with a number of books which arrived juuussst before the new lower prices started to come through, and which now look a smidge expensive compared to their newer counterparts.

So, we’ve decided to reduce the prices on a wide range of titles in order to even things out and offer you more competitive pricing across our non-textbook range*. There are too many titles to list, but you can be assured that we’re doing all we can to make sure our prices are as pleasing as can be.

Plus, you can still get your Student or Co-op Member discount on them! Dizzy stuff!

*OK, there is a little bit of fine print: Most of these reductions are one-off - unfortunately we may not be able to offer the reduced prices on reordered stock, so for some books, once our existing stock is gone the prices will revert to the publisher’s current recommended price.

Here’s some not-so-great-quality snaps of some recent...

Here’s some not-so-great-quality snaps of some recent non-fiction releases.

The next couple of months are big ones for publishing as we head toward Christmas - there are some very interesting things coming - including an autobiography from RICHARD WILKINS!*

*Rest assured that we will not be stocking this title.

RMIT Bookshop Semester 1 Survival Guide!

If you’re visiting a Uni bookshop for the first time right at the start of classes, you might be in for a bit of a shock. Most of the year, the Bookshop is a lovely place to be, but come the beginning of Semester that all changes. So here are some tips to help make the experience a little easier…

TIP 1 Come early! Most textbooks and equipment are available well before classes start, so if you’ve got your subjects confirmed, get in ahead of the crowds… it might mean losing a tiny bit of Summer holidays but believe us it’s worth it. If you’re visiting the shop in the first couple of weeks of classes, try to drop by as early or as late in the day as you can. While lunchtime is the most obvious time to grab your books, you’ll find hundreds of other people have the exact same idea. We operate extended hours for the first two weeks, so it’s easy to time your visit to avoid the busiest part of the day.

TIP 2 Do your homework! You’ll find RMIT textbook information here. To get your list, you’ll need your course codes, which you can find on myRMIT. Course codes are usually 4 letters and 4 numbers, for example ‘CHEM4567’. Some TAFE courses might be recorded under their overall code, such as ‘C4156’. Enter your course codes into the Textbook Search fields, and you’ll get a list showing all confirmed textbooks and their prices. Clicking through on each textbook will give you details of its’ location and current availability. Print out your list and bring it with you to the Bookshop to save yourself time, and to make it easier for our super-friendly staff members to help you if you’re having trouble finding anything.

TIP 3 Come prepared! At some points in the first weeks of semester, the queues in the Bookshop can be pretty long. There are a few things you can do to cut down on your waiting time, though. Having your payment ready you get to the registers will save time - it is fastest to pay with cash or card. Paying with cheques or over the phone will take much longer. If you’re not sure about anything you need, grab a staff member and get some help before you join the queues. You’ll find us on the floor all through the day and we’re experts at finding stuff and getting you through as quickly as possible! Lastly, bring a supermarket green bag or whatever other heavy-duty carrying equiement you’ve got… lots of textbooks are big, heavy and no fun to carry around in a plastic bag.

TIP 4 Join the Co-op! Signing up for RMIT Bookshop Co-op membership is a great idea, especially if you’ve got to buy a number of textbooks or if your course requires equipment and other materials. Unlike student discount, Co-op members get discounts on more than just books - you’ll save on stationery, art materials, lab & medical equipment and more. Membership is $10 and you’ll get the 12% member discount as soon as you join up. You can check out further details on Co-op membership here.

You’ll find details of the ‘India - The Cookbook’ here… http://bit.ly/fH6Y93

And you can buy it here… http://bit.ly/gELLzA

Vanity Fair's 'Writers Reading'

Vanity Fair's 'Writers Reading':

While it is great to have an extensive Summer reading list all ready to go, you may now run into the problem of sand or sunscreen in your eyes, Spumante-soaked books or an inability to find the energy to hold a book in front of your face.

But that’s ok, because you can download one or all of these great readings from Vanity Fair… many of the books featured have shown up on lots of Best-of-2010 lists and are a great way to get the feel of a book you might be thinking of buying (if you do decide to buy them, you may even like to buy them from us, but no pressure obviously).

Yep, another list...
Before that happens, archaeologists are excavating the foundations of a row of 1860s cottages, which have been hidden under the bitumen for 70-odd years.

It’s well worth coming to have a look for yourself before it disappears!

Here’s the cover of ‘The Memory Chalet’. We...

Here’s the cover of ‘The Memory Chalet’. We think it is quite beautiful.
